Dr. Joachim Postel, MD, PhD - Chief Cardiac Surgeon, the Heart Institute at SJH
Dr. Postel, board-certified in general surgery and thoracic surgery, joined St. Joseph Health-Humboldt County in July 2000. He received his Doctor of Medicine degree in 1970 and his doctorate in biochemistry in 1971, both from Johann Wolfgang Goethe University School Medicine in Frankfurt, Germany.
Dr. Postel's cardiothoracic surgery training was completed at the Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center and Children's Hospital at Harvard Medical School from 1978 - 1980. He was a special fellow in cardiac surgery at the Texas Heart Institute of St. Luke's Episcopal and Texas Children's Hospital in Houston.
Prior to joining the Heart Institute at St. Joseph Hospital, he was Chief of Cardiac Surgery at Cedars Medical Center, Miami. During his academic career at the University of South Florida, he was involved in research on cardiac assist devices.
Dr. Postel has performed thousands of cardiac surgeries, and has special expertise in mitral valve reconstructive procedures, as well as in aortic valve-sparing operations for aneurysms and dissections. He also has extensive experience with homograft and autograft aortic valve replacement procedures.
Dr. Postel is married with one daughter. He enjoys impressionist oil painting and also very much enjoys being in Humboldt County.
