St. Joseph Health, Humboldt County to Increase Frequency of Free Health
Screenings for the Community in 2019
For over two decades, St. Joseph Health, Humboldt County (SJH-HC) has offered
free, community-based health screenings and education as part of their
vision of health for a better world during a one-day health fair in February
at the Bayshore Mall. In an effort to increase the frequency and number
of health screening opportunities available throughout 2019, SJH-HC will
redesign its health screening program to more efficiently bring clinicians
to Humboldt’s most vulnerable residents. Screening events will take
place several times a month, every month of the year, at Community Resource
Centers and other locations throughout the community, instead of at a
one-day Health Fair.

Instead of relying on just one location to deliver these services once
a year, future clinical outreach opportunities will now be channeled through
a variety of intimate community settings meant to better deliver services
to the county’s most vulnerable where they live, work and play.
New in 2019, health screenings will take place monthly during food pantry
hours at St. Joseph’s Commnity Resource Centers in Blue Lake, Eureka,
Loleta and Rio Dell. In addition, physician-led community health forums
will continue to focus on a variety of health topics. Each setting will
offer blood pressure and blood sugar screenings, and distribution of low-cost
blood draw coupons.
Many of the clients served through the Community Resource Centers do not
have easy access to health care and health screenings and the new strategy
will deliver important clinical screenings to locations where the most
vulnerable are already receiving services, through our Community Resource
Centers (CRCs)".
The evolution of this community outreach strategy directly aligns with
the organizational mission of St. Joseph Health by allowing bed-side caregivers
the opportunity to step out into the community and serve vulnerable populations.
