Administration May Hong, MD, Program Director May Hong received her Doctor of Medicine from the University of Texas Medical Branch. Dr. Hong did her residency at Austin Medical Education Program in Austin, Texas. May has worked as a primary care physician in Texas and New York. May currently works at Redwood Community Health Center. In her spare time, she plays the piano and cello. Bruce Kessler, M.D. Designated Institutional Official (DIO) Dr. Kessler received his MD from Columbia University College of Physicians and Surgeons and completed his Internal Medicine residency at the Stanford University Hospital. He practiced primary care internal medicine in Humboldt County for over 40 years. In addition to being the DIO of the residency program he attends on the Resident's Inpatient Teaching Service. When not practicing medicine he enjoys visiting his 5 grandchildren, birdwatching, hunting mushrooms and going on long distance bicycle trips with his wife of 50 years. Karen Wilson Admin Assistant Karen Wilson joined the residency team in August, 2019. She has over 15 years of experience working in the health field in Humboldt County. Karen graduated from Sacramento State with her Bachelor’s in Communications. She was born and raised in Humboldt County and lives in Fortuna with her greatest joy kids Chandler and Courtney. She enjoys travel, backgammon and spending time at Ruth Lake. Courtney Ladika, MD Associate Program Director Dr. Ladika attended Wake Forest School of Medicine and completed residency at McKay Dee Family Medicine Residency, in Utah, where she served as Chief Resident. Courtney works at Redwood Community Health Center. She lives in Eureka, where she enjoys running through the redwoods forests, biking along the coast, and swimming in the lagoons. She also enjoys backpacking in the Trinity Alps. Faculty PATTI CHICO, M.D. Core Faculty Dr. Chico attended medical school and residency at the University of Illinois at Chicago. She joined our team after relocating from North Fork, California. Dr. Chico enjoys running, cycling, swimming, hiking, cooking and reading. Dr. Chico came to Humboldt to join the Family Medicine Residency Program as Core Faculty in 2019. Willard "Bill" Hunter, MD Core Family Medicine Faculty Dr. Hunter attended medical school at the University of California, Los Angeles and completed his Family Medicine residency at University of California, Davis. Bill served as medical director of Redwoods Rural Health Center in Redway for 20 years, before becoming Open Door’s Chief Medical Officer. Bill is known for his energy, passion and his beautiful singing voice. Katherine “Kate” Estlin, MD Family Medicine Faculty A Humboldt native Dr. Estlin earned her Doctor of Medicine from the University of Southern California and completed her Family Medicine residency at Group Health Seattle, before returning home to practice medicine in Fortuna. Kate lives with her husband and three children in Hydesville. Margarette Shegog, MD Behavioral Health Faculty Margarette Shegog attended Boonshoft School of Medicine at Wright State University, in Ohio. She completed her family medicine residency with obstetrics, along with a fellowship in behavioral health, at Mountain Area Health Education Center in Asheville, North Carolina. Margarette has taught in Namibia with the U.S. Peace Corps and worked on health initiatives in India with the America-India Service Corps. Her hobbies include nature walks, crafting, and tabletop gaming. Kelvin Vu, DO Family Medicine Faculty Kelvin Vu received his medical degree from Western University and completed his residency training in Family Medicine at University of California Davis Medical Center, where he also served as Chief Resident in his last year. In his free time, Kelvin enjoys traveling the world with his wife and two sons, watching movies, and playing sports.
