The following are guidelines/directives to facilitate processes involved with student clinical experiences at St. Joseph Hospital, Eureka and Redwood Memorial Hospital.

Guidelines for Clinical Instructors at St. Joseph Hospital, Eureka

1. Student and instructor orientation requirements:

a. Clinical instructors new to the hospital:

  1. Review the information on the student website.
  2. A tour of the hospital and unit specific orientation is advised for the instructor unfamiliar with the hospital. New instructors may contact the Clinical Education Department at 707-445-8121 ext. 5908 to arrange for a hospital tour or may tour with one of the experienced clinical instructors. Instructors should contact the Department Director / Manager to arrange for department-specific tour and orientation.
  3. Attendance at Nursing Orientation which is held twice a month is encouraged. Contact the Clinical Education Department at 707-445-8121 ext. 5908 to register.

b. Student and instructor orientation requirements are outlined below.

1. View Orientation Modules
-  How often: Once each academic year prior to clinical rotation
-  Retain post test in student /instructor file for current academic year

2. Complete Orientation Post Test
- How often: Once each academic year prior to clinical rotation
- Retain post test in student /instructor file for current academic year

3. Corporate Compliance Handbook
- How often: Once each academic year prior to clinical rotation

4. Student/Instructor Acknowledgements: Abuse, Confidentiality, Corporate Compliance
- How often: Once only, prior to first clinical rotation at SJH or RMH
- Retain in student/instructor file at school for duration of academic program affiliation.

2. Prior to start of student clinical rotations, clinical instructors are responsible for:
  • Collecting acknowledgement statements and placing in student files or, for returning students, verifying signed statements are in their student files.
  • Collecting and grading the student’s Orientation Tests. The student needs to pass with a score of 100%. Please discuss any missed questions with the student to ensure understanding.
  • Verifying all student and instructor requirements have been met by signing and submitting the Student / Instructor Compliance Attestation form (see Forms) with a list of the students attached. This form may be faxed to the SJH Clinical Education Department at 707-269-3759.
  • Submitting a Clinical Rotation form for the semester. This form may be Fax to the SJH Clinical Education Department at 707-269-3759.
  • Scheduling an in-person Student Welcome to the organization with the Clinical Education Department. This time can also be used for you to tour the hospital / unit with your students, complete the Pyxis tutorial or validate student competency for select skills.
3. Scheduling post conference meeting:

Contact Support Services at 707-445-8121, ext. 7688 to schedule a location. Be advised, construction noise can make it difficult to hear in our SJH 3rd Floor Conference Rooms. Additional space is available at the General Hospital Campus.
