St. Joseph Hospital welcomes Humboldt County’s first baby of 2013

Eureka (January 2, 2013) – After trying to have a baby for more than two years, a local couple had more than one reason to celebrate on New Year’s Day. Just two minutes into 2013, at 12:02 a.m. on Tuesday, January 1, Cankane Joseph Maunder was born at St. Joseph Hospital in Eureka.

Parents Joel and Miranda Maunder had wanted to have a child ever since they got married more than two years ago. Their wish finally came true and Cankane was due on January 12, 2013. Scheduled to have a caesarean section later this week, both were surprised when Miranda went into labor early on December 31, 2012.

Cankane weighed in at 5 pounds, 10 ounces and was 18 inches long. This is the first son for both mom and dad, although Joel has an older daughter.

Joel Maunder said his son’s name was determined after he had a dream where God told him he was going to have a son and his name was going to be Cankane, which means “beautiful spirit.”
As of 12:00 p.m. on January 2, 2013, Redwood Memorial Hospital in Fortuna was still waiting to welcome its first baby of 2013.

Per hospital tradition, the first babies born in the new year receive a gift basket stuffed with baby necessities like diapers, blankets, child-proof safety gear and more from St. Joseph and Redwood Memorial Hospital hospitals.
Congratulations to the Maunder family on its new bundle of joy born in the new year.
