Fortuna, CA (May 1, 2013) – Four employees from Redwood Memorial Hospital recently 'stepped up' their daily walking and their efforts have paid off. Team members Julie Alber, Susan Fraser, Lynetta Hagan and Lauri Rose walked more than 1.4 million steps for two weeks in February to take home the top prize in the Go the Distance step challenge from Virgin HealthMiles (a web-based walking fitness and activity program that rewards members as they reach for their healthy best). They competed against the top teams from all of the St. Joseph Health ministries in California.

Wearing pedometers that tracked every step, team members had several secrets to their success. "I was literally taking steps from the moment I got up in the morning until I went to bed at night," said Lauri Rose, a nurse in the Med/Surg unit at Redwood Memorial Hospital. "I would even stand in front of my computer workstation and take steps in an effort to reach my daily goal," she added. Other team members attended Zumba classes and got up at 2 a.m. to start walking. "The challenge was fun. It really brought us together as a team and we all felt better at the end of the day from our extra physical activity," said Lyne Hagan, a radiologic technologist at Redwood Memorial.

Two of the team members also reached their goal of 30,000 steps a day almost every day of the challenge. To put that in perspective, just over 2,000 steps are in one mile and 10,000 steps are in five miles. A sedentary person may average only 1,000 to 3,000 steps a day. The Go the Distance step challenge was part of St. Joseph Health's employee wellness program, Choose Well. St. Joseph Health is committed to helping staff make their well-being a priority. The Choose Well program offers screenings, well-being assessments and other tools to employees.

Not only did the team members from Redwood Memorial Hospital take steps to improve their health, but they also each won a mini iPad for their hard work. To learn more about Redwood Memorial Hospital, visit www.redwoodmemorialorg.
