Since 1996, the KKHIC, which is a collaborative program with St. Joseph Health – Humboldt County, has offered local residents free medical resources, including print and online health information. Originally opening in the Humboldt County Library and later moved to St. Joseph Hospital, the KKHIC is designed to help people obtain information needed to make informed decisions about lifestyle and health care choices.

A local woman named Kris Kelly (the former director of North Coast Emergency Services) served as the inspiration for the founding of the center. Kelly, the former director of North Coast Emergency Services, was dedicated to finding information about her own disease.

Today the center is located in the Evergreen Lodge at St. Joseph Hospital and it continues its mission of providing a variety of health information and resources for community members to help reduce the uncertainty and indecision about treatment options.

"The mission of the Kris Kelly Health Information Center is to offer reliable medical information from trusted sources," said KKHIC coordinator Janette Garrison. "It’s really all about helping people make informed decisions about their health care."

Any community member can request information by phone or email, can access the information directly online or visit the KKHIC for assistance. All inquiries are confidential. The KKHIC does not recommend or make medical decisions but allows consumers to analyze and interpret the health information for their individual situations.

The KKHIC is open at the Evergreen Lodge Monday through Thursday from noon until 4 p.m. For more information, contact KKHIC coordinator Janette Garrison at (707) 442-9094 or visit the website at
