Patients in the Eel River Valley now have outpatient rehabilitation services
available closer to home. Redwood Memorial Hospital celebrated the grand
opening of its Outpatient Rehabilitation facility on Monday with a ribbon
cutting and open house.
In addition to Outpatient Rehabilitation Services offered St. Joseph Hospital’s
General Hospital campus in Eureka, Redwood Memorial Hospital’s new Outpatient
Rehab Services include occupational, physical and speech therapy.
Outpatient Rehabilitation is a service available to patients that primarily
focuses on, but is not limited to, maintaining and/or improving a person’s
function and mobility while decreasing pain. The therapy is regarded as
a conservative treatment attempting to maintain and/or improve function
and mobility without the prescription of medicine or surgery. Patients
need to obtain a doctor’s referral to receive services.
Before the hospital added these services, patients routinely traveled to
Eureka from areas as distant as Garberville and Ruth Lake to receive outpatient
rehabilitation services. The facility also provides the only therapy services
in the area for MediCal patients.
During the ribbon cutting ceremony, Jim Peaker, Regional Director of Rehabilitation
Services for St. Joseph and Redwood Memorial Hospital hospitals, noted the commitment
of the Sisters of St. Joseph of Orange to identifying and meeting the
needs of the community.
"The Sisters’ mission has always been to go out into the community
and meet the needs of the ‘dear neighbor,’" Peaker said,
adding that this is exactly what happened in this case. "The community
needed outpatient rehabilitation services in Fortuna and here we are stepping
up to meet that need."
