Redwood Memorial Hospital in Fortuna has been named one of the nation’s top healing hospitals for 2008. The Nashville-based Baptist Healing Trust recently recognized Redwood Memorial as among the "Top Ten Healing Hospitals" for 2008.
The "Healing Hospital" recognition was created to honor hospitals and leaders that have made a special commitment to developing cultures that promote the best healing environment possible. This year’s selection committee reviewed hospitals coast to coast before making its final decision.
Redwood Memorial Hospital earned the number nine spot on the panel’s list of the nation’s top healing hospitals. The selection panel singled out RMH for its Cornerstones program. This three-day orientation program focuses on the hospital’s patient-centered "Journey" philosophy, which forms the foundation for all programs, services and outreach the hospital provides. Started in 2001, the Journey philosophy is rooted in the concept of providing the most healing environment possible, while keeping the patient at the center of all decisions and including patients and their loved ones in the decision-making process while providing a healing environment. Through services like the labyrinth and healing gardens, massage, music and pet therapy, the hospital strives to heal the entire being – mind, body and spirit.
"It is a great honor to be recognized for our efforts to provide patients with the best healing environment we can," said Joe Mark, CEO of St. Joseph Health – Humboldt County. "This recognition is validation of what we at Redwood Memorial Hospital know in our hearts to be true."
Joe Rogers, chief operating officer for RMH, added that being recognized as one of the nation’s best healing hospitals speaks volumes about the commitment of staff, physicians and volunteers to providing compassionate care for patients.
"The Redwood family feels a tremendous responsibility for, and loyalty to, our community," Rogers said. "The Journey has given us a formal way to define, and act on, this commitment."
Another ministry from St. Joseph Health was also named a "Top Ten" hospital by the Baptist Healing Trust: St. Joseph of Orange Hospital, which earned the number two spot.
