St. Joseph Health–Humboldt County Receives National Award for Supporting Oncology Nurses

Eureka, CA (December 15, 2016) – St. Joseph Health–Humboldt County has received a national award for its support of registered oncology nurses at the Peals Family Chemotherapy Center in Eureka.

The 2017 Employer Recognition Award from the Oncology Nursing Society (ONS) recognizes St. Joseph Health–Humboldt County for providing exemplary support to registered oncology nurses through its commitment to nursing education and professional growth.

“Being recognized for our support of registered oncology nurses is a testament to St. Joseph Health’s commitment to its employees and to improving the health of the communities we serve,” said Bruce Broswick, Area Director for Cancer Services, St. Joseph Health, Humboldt County. “It’s truly a pleasure to receive this award and it would not have been possible without the support of our local physicians and community partners.”

In winning the award, St. Joseph joins past recipients such as the Cancer Institute of New Jersey, the Stanford Cancer Center and Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center in New York for its “commendable” support of nurses. St. Joseph won in the small employer category, competing against health care institutions across the country with 25 nurses or less.

St. Joseph offers a variety of professional and educational opportunities to help oncology nurses develop their expertise and better serve the community. The Clinical Education Department offers 20 hours of continuing education courses year-round, allowing nurses to acquire knowledge and advance in their field.

The hospital also provides bonuses for nurses who receive national certification. More than half of St. Joseph’s oncology nurses are nationally certified, demonstrating a culture that promotes professional advancement and values a high level of expertise.

Additionally, the St. Joseph Hospital Foundation recently developed a fund that allows physicians and community members to financially support the continuing education of oncology nurses. The fund helps cover the cost of trainings, conferences and other professional advancement opportunities.

St. Joseph Health–Humboldt County will officially be recognized for its support of oncology nurses at the ONS Annual Congress May 4-7, 2017 in Denver, Colorado.
