St. Joseph Health — Humboldt County Donates Nearly 100 New Backpacks to Local School Children

Eureka, CA (August 23, 2016) – Nearly 100 children in Humboldt County will be starting the school year off right with new backpacks and school supplies thanks to the generosity of employees at St. Joseph Health—Humboldt County (SJH-HC).

Each year, SJH-HC employees and volunteers collect backpacks filled with grade-appropriate school supplies for the county’s neediest students. The backpacks are then distributed by SJH-HC’s Community Resource Centers to students in the communities of Blue Lake, Loleta, Rio Dell, Willow Creek and surrounding areas.

As in years past, the most generous backpack donation came from Donna Valle, a nurse at St. Joseph Hospital who participates every fall. This year, Donna donated a total of 26 backpacks filled with school supplies, and said she was motivated by “the personal satisfaction of knowing that I am helping children in our community by contributing to their educational success.”

Says Donna: “It is so important for children to be excited to start school and ready to learn. If I can help with that, then it is worth it for me.”
