St. Joseph Health Employee Honored for Nursing Excellence

Eureka (July 9, 2014) – A longtime employee at St. Joseph Hospital has been recognized for his excellence in clinical nursing. Tim Talbert, currently the director of St. Joseph Hospital’s Infusion Services and Cancer Care Program, was honored in June by the local nursing honor society, the Omicron Omega Chapter of Sigma Theta Tau International.

Talbert began his career at St. Joseph Hospital 33 years ago as an ED tech. Over the years he has held numerous roles, including ED nurse, charge nurse, ED manager, nursing supervisor, employee health nurse and an IV therapy nurse. Most recently Talbert developed and implemented St. Joseph Health – Humboldt County’s Ambulatory Infusion Program and assumed management responsibility for the Cancer Care Program.

The award from Sigma Theta Tau recognizes Talbert for his depth and breadth of clinical expertise, creativity in approaches to quality care, and a significant contribution to the scope and practice of nursing that inspires others. Talbert was nominated for the award by three of the nurses in his departments at St. Joseph Hospital. He said the award, which is for clinical excellence, was particularly meaningful to him because he was nominated by his nursing colleagues. “While I have been in a management role for most of the last three decades, I always think of myself as a nurse first. I have always tried to keep a clinical component in my day-to-day work role,” said Talbert.

David O’Brien, MD, President, St. Joseph Health-Humboldt County, said Talbert’s award is a testament to his dedication to his work and his patients. “Tim’s excellent clinical skills, leadership ability and compassion benefit our patients and our staff. St. Joseph Hospital is blessed to count him as one of our superb nurses,” said Dr. O’Brien.
