St. Joseph Health – Humboldt County awards Care for the Poor grants

Eureka, CA (March 7, 2013) – St. Joseph Health – Humboldt County recently awarded $100,000 to several local organizations as part of its annual Care for the Poor grants. The grants are chosen by the Community Benefits Committee of St. Joseph and Redwood Memorial Hospital hospitals and this year they address food insecurity on the North Coast.

The eight organizations receiving grants this year include: Arcata House Partnership, Community Alliance for Family Farmers, Food for People, Humboldt Senior Resource Center, Redwood Community Action Agency, Redwood Region of the Society of St. Vincent de Paul, Open Door Community Health Center and the Serenity Inn. The money will go to a variety of programs designed to help ensure fruits, vegetables and nutritious meals are available to some of the most vulnerable in our community. Additionally, one grant will help provide mental health resources for the local Latino community.

Martha Shanahan, area manager of Community Benefits for St. Joseph Health – Humboldt County, said awarding the grants is one of the highlights of the year for the Community Benefits Committee. "Over time, St. Joseph Hospital and Redwood Memorial Hospital have developed strong partnerships with local community organizations and we are thrilled to once again be able to provide these grants to support the valuable work they do in our community," Shanahan said.

As a Catholic health care ministry of the Sisters of St. Joseph of Orange, our mission is to improve the health and quality of life of people in the communities we serve. In addition to providing high quality health care, all St. Joseph Health entities are committed to reinvesting 10 percent of our income back into the community. St. Joseph Health – Humboldt County is pleased to be able to reach beyond the walls of our facilities and work with the eight local recipients of this year's Care for the Poor grants.
