SJHS Given Gallup Great Workplace Award for 2009 (third straight year)The Gallup Organization has named St. Joseph Health (SJHS) one of its 2009 Great Workplace Award winners, which makes this the third consecutive year SJHS has received this distinction.

A panel of workforce experts selected SJHS with 22 other organization throughout 150 countries for this award that honors organizations whose employee engagement results demonstrate they have the most productive and engaged workforce in the world.

"The winners of this award have established a new global standard for engaging people," Tom Rath, who leads Gallup’s Workplace and Leadership Consulting practice. "We compared millions of workgroups we have studies around the world. The awardees have worked tirelessly to create an environment that values people. They go far beyond trivial perks to ensure that each employee has an emotional connection to the company’s mission and growth."

St. Joseph Heath System maintains its commitment to making sure its organization provides a quality workplace where employees are valued and rewarded for their contributions.

"It is truly a blessing that we have received this award for the third year in a row," said Deborah Proctor, president and CEO of St. Joseph Health. "In these troubling times, it’s imperative that our employees feel that the work they do is a valuable contribution to our organization as well as the communities that we serve. Our employees practice our core value of Excellence everyday in every aspect of their work life. We believe it is our responsibility to create an environment where our employees know their voice matters and ensure a positive quality of work life is a top priority throughout St. Joseph Health System. We applaud our employees for their active involvement to improve patient care, maintain highly safe environments for one another and our patients, and ensure that we achieve our mission of continuing the healing ministry of Jesus Christ in the tradition of the Sisters of St. Joseph of Orange."

St. Joseph Health has four core values – Excellence, Dignity, Service and Justice. These values are incorporated into the everyday operation of each SJHS location and employees are encouraged to find innovative ways to make them part of their individual work efforts.

Deanna Salazar in St. Joseph Health’s Mission Hospital in Mission Viejo, CA states, "Mission Hospital is truly a great place to work. Not only do we preach their core values of Justice, Excellence, Dignity and Service, we live it. It’s important that staff also believe in - and live - the values which makes for an extremely caring environment for patients, families and visitors as well as co-workers." Salazar works in the Imaging Services Department at Mission.

Jan d'Orsay, LMSW, an employee from SJHS Texas-based Covenant Health System states, "I have worked at Covenant as a social worker for over 20 years, and have been at Joe Arrington Cancer Center for the past six years. One thing I love and really provides fulfillment for me is that Covenant is a faith-based ministry. I look at my time at work more as ministry time than just being on the job. It is a blessing to me to hopefully make the difficult road for our cancer patients a bit easier by being present with them. Perhaps it is a smile, a hug, the delivery of a prayer shawl, or resources to help with medications, lodging, or gasoline—whatever it is, I pray the Lord helps me be an instrument of His peace and love and hope to that person or family. I am so grateful that these "sacred encounters" are part of our culture and ministry. What a joy to live out the values of our great organization! I am proud of St. Joseph Health has being chosen for the third year as a recipient Great Place to Work award."
